Website owners should consider usability principles when adding online video to their pages, it has been advised.
According to usability specialist Mrudula Kodali, it is vital to take the user experience into account before launching online video.
This can include making it absolutely clear that it is a video rather than a still image, offering detailed titles and summaries of the clip's content, and providing text transcripts for those with impaired vision.
Doing so can not only enhance usability, but could also boost search engine optimisation if the right keywords are used, Ms Kodali commented, according to ITWales.
"You must use relevant keywords, which are good for SEO as well as usability as these are likely to be the terms people are typing in searches," she stated.
YouTube recently launched a new tool allowing video creators to track viewer numbers on a second-by-second basis and see which sections and scenes are the most popular.
