Facebook 'to overtake MySpace in US'

Facebook looks set to overtake MySpace in terms of US traffic in the next month, it has been claimed.

According to Google Trends data analysed by the Royal Pingdom blog, if current trends continue Facebook will see its traffic rise as it continues to gain new users, while MySpace will fall behind due to less promising levels of new registrations.

The blog suggested that some of the potential reasons for this include MySpace users signing up to Facebook and using both websites at the same time, as well as the possibility that Facebook is attracting both brand new social network users and those registered with other non-MySpace communities.

"It doesn't look like MySpace is losing that much traffic, so it's unlikely that its users are just jumping ship," the blog explained.

In August, comScore released data showing that Facebook saw audience growth of 153 per cent worldwide between June 2007 and 2008, rising to 132.1 million this year from almost 52.2 million last year.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18805982-ADNFCR
