Firms 'should make online branch locators more usable'

Businesses should ensure that online information on company locations and addresses is easily accessible, according to usability expert Jakob Nielsen.

In his latest Alertbox column, Mr Nielsen explained that making such data available can help companies to generate more offline custom.

He advised webmasters to make branch locators accessible from all pages of their website and to enable users to obtain maps and directions for each address.

This is particularly important considering a study showing that less than two-thirds of web users are able to easily find the address they want on company websites, Mr Nielsen stated.

"Ideally, even people who start out at a search engine will be directed to location information on your site rather than on a third-party service," he explained.

"To make this option possible, your site must have a locator."

The expert's previous Alertbox articles have looked at web design and usability issues such as sitemaps, intranets and tabs.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18782109-ADNFCR
