Generic domains 'falling out of favour'

Generic domain names are becoming less popular as more web users rely on branded search to navigate the internet.

This is according to Techworld editor John Dunn, who said that while people used to rely on URLs containing generic terms to find what they were looking for, this is no longer the case thanks to the rise of search engines.

"For example, if people want to find a car, they will go online and put some brand names in. So car.com wouldn't [necessarily] get you any more hits," he commented.

Companies are now focusing on keeping their copyright intact by acquiring new addresses as they are released to avoid being targeted by cybersquatters, Mr Dunn went on to explain.

This may get harder when plans by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers to allow domain name applicants to create their own addresses are implemented, however.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18773261-ADNFCR
