Businesses 'ignoring Web 2.0'
Web 2.0
08 September 2008
Few office workers make use of Web 2.0 technology as part of their jobs, according to a new poll.
About 1,000 employees were surveyed by networking technology firm Telindus in the study, which revealed that seven per cent of respondents use YouTube for work purposes, vnunet.com reports.
Social networking was found to be used by six per cent of workers, with five per cent stating that they utilise podcasts as part of their everyday duties.
Mark Hutchinson, managing director of Telindus, said that this low take-up of Web 2.0 may mean that companies are missing out on the potential benefits of the channel in terms of marketing and communications.
He commented: "As long as employees use collaborative applications such as social networking sites, blogs and wikis responsibly, businesses can benefit from new and engaging ways of interacting with staff, customers and suppliers, as well as prospective employees and customers."
Social computing and microblogging will become more vital in the enterprise in the next two to five years, according to a recent Gartner forecast.
