Good website accessibility 'can aid SEO'

Webmasters could kill two birds with one stone by improving accessibility and search engine optimisation (SEO) at the same time, an expert has said.

Writing for Search Engine Journal, Ann Smarty said that the two areas often overlap and it is now relatively easy to widen website access for disabled users while also giving search engine rankings a boost.

Marketers could do this by filling in all alt tags for images across their websites, which gives more information to both users and search engine crawlers, as does transcribing video and audio into text, she stated.

SEO can also be aided through the use of highly descriptive link anchor text instead of 'click here', something that also offers further content signposts for the visually impaired, Ms Smarty noted.

Webmasters may be particularly keen to improve accessibility in the wake of a recent lawsuit involving the website of US retailer Target, which saw the company agree to pay a settlement to complainants who had been unable to access the site using normal screen reading software.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18766913-ADNFCR
