Website owners would do well to ensure their old domain names do not fall into the hands of a potential criminal, it has been warned.
Sophos recently discovered that a web address belonging to the now defunct National High Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) is now in the ownership of a German internet marketer.
While the new website does not appear to feature any malicious content, Sophos pointed out that if the new owner was less than scrupulous, visitors to the site - which is still linked to by a number of websites, including the BBC - could be in danger.
"This situation may never arise, but the message is clear - all organisations must take proper care of their website domains, especially if they are widely linked to from other sites," commented Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, on his blog.
Fasthosts recently released statistics suggesting that British domain name disputes have risen by 30 per cent in the last 12 months.
