E-commerce websites need to ensure they will be able to handle the spike in demand expected in the run-up to Christmas, it has been warned.

According to the latest E-Customer Service Index from the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG), compiled in conjunction with eDigitalResearch and ipoints.co.uk, almost seven in ten consumers are likely to buy gifts online this Christmas.

Some 77 per cent of these will purchase at least half of their presents on the internet - representing an increase from the 56 per cent recorded in 2007, mostly for cost reasons, the research suggested.

Chris Russell, director at eDigitalResearch, remarked: "With the demand for internet shopping set to reach a record high this Christmas, e-retailers need to ensure that they have the appropriate resources available to respond promptly to customer requests."

Amazon UK, Argos and Play.com were the three most popular online retailers among Britons in August, according to the most recent IMRG-Hitwise Hot Shops List.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18764623-ADNFCR
