Facial recognition technology added to Picasa
Web 2.0
03 September 2008
Google photo-sharing service Picasa has added facial recognition technology to its tagging system.
The latest version of the application, Picasa 3.0, is capable of automatically grouping together photos of the same person once the user has tagged a particular name several times.
According to Google, this function means that users will be able to sort and tag their images much more quickly than previously.
Picasa 3.0 also features a new 'explore' section that allows users to look at geo-tagged images from around the world, as well as the capability to share full-resolution photo albums with others.
"As users get more experienced, they're demanding more creative ways to remix, enjoy and distribute their photos," commented product manager Mike Horowitz on the Google Photos Blog.
Picasa 3.0 is currently available for the Windows and Linux operating systems, while a version for Mac is presently being developed.
Google acquired Picasa four years ago.
