Spending on search engine marketing campaigns in the UK will rise by almost a quarter to reach a total figure of £2.75 billion by the end of this year, according to E-consultancy.

The website's latest Search Engine Marketing Buyer's Guide suggested that paid search will comprise the bulk of this spending, accounting for £2.24 billion of investment - up 23 per cent compared with 2007.

Meanwhile, search engine optimisation (SEO) will see £330 million of spending, some 32 per cent more than last year, E-consultancy noted.

Chris Lake, editor-in-chief of E-consultancy, said that while the slowing economy means that this year's spending is not as high as in previous years, the search marketing sector will nevertheless continue to perform well in the near future.

"Consumer internet usage is flattening out, but the sector is certainly more robust than other media channels that have a less measurable return on investment and should continue to grow for years to come," he commented.

Earlier this year, the organisation published a report indicating that 61 per cent of companies intend to spend more on SEO in the next 12 months.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18762534-ADNFCR
