Preparations for the busy festive period should start now for online retailers, it has been advised.

It is a good to begin planning for the Christmas season by October at the latest to ensure that the website is well able to cope with higher demand, according to Verizon Business.

Measures that e-commerce firms should undertake to adequately prepare for the coming months include checking that important procedures such as checkout are able to work under high pressure, it noted.

Monitoring the performance of the website through busy dates such as the first weekend in December and the last shipping date before Christmas is also a good idea, the company states.

Security is also an important consideration, with Verizon Business explaining: "Hackers frequently target retailers, looking to capitalise on the wealth of consumer and identity-related information that retailers store.

"Retailers should make sure to protect legacy applications, as well as sensitive data stored in log files."

In the UK, consumers spent more than £4.8 billion on online purchases during July, according to the most recent IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18758089-ADNFCR
