Spending on internet shopping reached £4.8 billion in the UK during July, according to the latest IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.
The research showed that online sales increased by 11.3 per cent during the month, with the clothing, footwear and accessories category seeing the fastest rate of growth, thanks to the summer holidays.
Electrical goods also performed well as a result of the launch of the iPhone 3G, the report suggested.
The figures contrast with recent statistics from the British Retail Consortium suggesting that high street sales dipped 0.9 per cent in July.
Jo Evans, managing director of IMRG, said: "Online retailers are taking full advantage of the present situation by making exceptional offers on their websites, with online sales now in full swing and UK shoppers using the web to search out those bargains, compare prices and ensure they get the best deals."
Price comparison site uSwitch.com recently predicted that online shopping will make up more than 50 per cent of total retail spending by 2026.
