Retailers need to ensure their mobile websites are adequate for the needs of consumers who are increasingly using their handsets to surf the web.

This is according to BT, which polled users of the Broadband Anywhere BT ToGo smartphone and found that 45 per cent of respondents browse the mobile web for products and services, with a third checking prices and reviews.

Almost 40 per cent of users said that they preferred easy website navigation when browsing the mobile internet, with 25 per cent calling for fast-loading pages and 20 per cent for mobile-specific sites.

"People want fit-for-purpose content that offers as sophisticated an experience on their handheld device as they're used to on their PC," stated BT futurologist Ian Neild.

"At the current rate, many businesses are in danger of being caught on the hop."

Mobile internet penetration in the UK is currently at 12.9 per cent, Nielsen Mobile recently revealed.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18739177-ADNFCR
