SEO essentials: Selecting the right keywords

When creating a search engine optimisation strategy, web developers should be careful in their selection of keywords, one expert has advised.
Shaun Oakes, writing in the TechLeader blog, offered a series of tips to those looking to optimise their website.
Using popular and searched-for terms is one of the ways in which to ensure that keyword usage is effective, he writes.
Relevance to the website itself and its products is also of importance. Mr Oakes uses 'cape town accommodation' as one example, stating that this would be ineffective for a tour operator website.
In addition, ensuring that the terms are not over-used is imperative.
"'Cape Town guest house' may be a great term, but there are eight million competing pages on Google," he said.
Search Insider spokesperson Chrysi Philalithes recently suggested that businesses should apply SEO principles to rich media and images as well as text.
