A new report from JupiterResearch has revealed that sports fans tend to search for news updates via their local press - a trend that websites could capitalise on with the right search engine marketing campaign.
According to the company, local sources such as newspapers and television are particularly popular with sports lovers looking to get their daily fix of information.
It highlighted the possibility of locally-focused sites taking advantage of this by implementing the right search engine optimisation strategy.
JupiterResearch president David Schatsky also pointed to the non-advertising opportunities posed by sports fans' tendency towards certain online activities, commenting: "Serious sports fans' heavy involvement with shopping and fantasy sports presents an opportunity for revenue streams outside of advertising, such as paid video, ticketing and merchandising."
Meanwhile, British web users flocked to the Euro 2008 website during the tournament despite the absence of a UK team from the event, David Farrelly, head of web and content for UEFA Media Technologies, said last month.
