Local web design 'more important' for international firms

A growing number of multinational corporations are designing their websites to meet the needs of specific regions while also maintaining a consistent brand image, it has been claimed.
John Yunker of Byte Level Research said at a recent webinar sponsored by Lionbridge Technologies that the days where two company sites for different regions appeared to belong to two different firms are over for some large businesses, SearchCIO.com reported.
He looked at previous and current websites operated by Avon Products, for example, which showed that the company has improved its Spain and China sites to make use of the same design while also containing elements specific to each nation.
Mr Yunker went on to note: "As important as global consistency is, it should not be so restrictive that the local offices don't have the freedom to promote locally relevant products and still have a design they feel works with their market."
Meanwhile, Larisa Thomason of NetMechanic has advised businesses to consider the implications of using the same colour scheme in different regions.
She pointed out that while white is seen as representing purity in the west, in Asia the colour is a signifier of death.
