Mobile web design in the spotlight

The recent launch of the iPhone 3G - which offers faster web browsing speeds than its predecessor - has thrown the issue of designing for the mobile internet into sharper focus.
According to the New York Times, web designers are increasingly making use of techniques that help iPhone owners to get the most from their mobile internet browsing experience, such as incorporating larger text and creating pages that only scroll vertically.
Barney Pell, chief executive of natural language search provider Powerset, also told the newspaper that the popularity of the iPhone for web surfing purposes means that designers are increasingly taking away the unnecessary elements of fulkl-featured sites to create a mobile site that has just the bare essentials.
"The small screen forces you to be even more ruthless and focus on usability almost like a haiku," he remarked.
According to comScore, eight in ten iPhone users take advantage of their handsets for browsing the internet.
This is compared with 32 per cent of those with other smartphones, the study revealed.
