Yahoo! has launched an open platform called Build Your Own Search Service (BOSS) to allow third parties to create their own search facility using the company's technology.

Developers can now access Yahoo!'s API in beta mode to create tailored search services that make use of Yahoo!'s algorithms but enable the creator to display and rank results however they wish.

The company also revealed that it is releasing a Python library and UI templates that enable third parties to mash-up BOSS search results with other data sources that are also public.

"Today, the search market is generally limited to three major search engines to drive innovation and growth," said Prabhakar Raghavan, Yahoo! Search's chief strategist, in an official statement.

"BOSS opens up the playing field for developers and companies to disrupt the search market."

Mr Raghavan also told CNET News.com that those who come up with successful search ideas based on the BOSS platform will need to display search ads in the future.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18679084-ADNFCR
