Search engine Google has launched a new three-dimensional application which allows users to customise an online space.

Lively, which was described by Information Week today (July 9th) as a "Google Talk-powered chat room with 3D camera controls", also enables users to design their own animated character - or avatar - which can interact with others in the virtual world.

In a post on the Official Google Blog, engineering manager Nianine Wang stated that the virtual world created within the Lively application can be accessed through blogs and websites.

The programme features support for YouTube videos to play on virtual television screens. Users can customise their rooms with digital art and play music uploaded from their personal computer.

"Of course, you can chat with each other, and you can also interact through animated actions," the engineering manager added.

"In our user research, we’ve been amazed at how much more poignant it is to receive an animated hug than seeing the text '[[hug]]'."ADNFCR-1093-ID-18677221-ADNFCR
