How to make websites more usable

Tips on improving the usability of websites have been offered by Shailesh Manga of consultancy Optimal Usability.
Speaking to the New Zealand Herald, the expert said that there are a number of ways in which businesses can make their websites more usable for the public, including presenting important information clearly and prominently and designing the navigation system so that users always know where on the site they are.
He also advised web designers to make appropriate use of visual elements such as colours, fonts, icons and labels, as well as laying out text in a format suitable for those reading on a computer screen, which may include short paragraphs and bullet points, for example.
Mr Manga commented: "Even if a site is well-organised and information is in clearly labelled categories, the design of the navigation elements can undo good work."
Graham Charlton of E-consultancy recently undertook a review of Thomas Cook's new website, concluding that while the site has made a number of improvements regarding usability, it still has much to do to provide a completely satisfactory user experience.
