Top web design dos and don'ts

Web Design

A list of the top website design "commandments" has been compiled from a number of experts by Business Week.

The tips cover many of the basics associated with web design, such as not overusing Adobe Flash technology, refraining from hiding content with pop-ups and other ads and making use of a clean, uncluttered design that prioritises ease of navigation.

Other advice includes keeping website names simple so that they are less likely to sound out-of-date over time, keeping fonts simple and readable and making use of engaging content and popular technologies of the present day.

"Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook and their cohorts have become a part of daily life. Sites that can incorporate these elements into their design will connect with users in a meaningful way by providing functionality and an interface with which they're already familiar," Business Week states.

Chris Nodder of Nielsen Norman Group recently told CMS Wire that web developers would do well to ensure that site content is as simple as possible, particularly as visitors are most likely to arrive at a site via a search engine, meaning that firms should take it upon themselves to make it easier for users to find the information they want.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18659375-ADNFCR
