Web use will soon soar to the point where a quarter of the global population regularly goes online.
This is according to a forecast from JupiterResearch, which suggests that internet user numbers will grow to 1.8 billion by 2012, representing an increase of 44 per cent.
The report cited significant growth in emerging economies, particularly countries such as Brazil, Russia, India and China, as one of the main drivers of this increase.
It suggested that China's online population is likely to grow to the extent that it becomes the largest in the world by 2011.
"Asia will not only have the highest online growth rate compared to other regions in the world, but will also present a substantially large pool of sophisticated online users as a market to tap into David Schatsky, president of JupiterResearch, commented.
Meanwhile, a new study from Juniper Research has suggested that the number of people accessing mobile internet services around the world will surge from 577 million today to more than 1.7 billion by 2013.
