Google Trends turns to website traffic

Google's Trends tool has been updated to include a new feature that enables users to analyse traffic patterns at individual websites.
The Google Trends for Websites application provides data pertaining to visitor numbers at certain websites, allowing users to compare patterns across different sites and geographical regions.
Related website and search data can also be looked at for each site, with Michael Arrington of TechCrunch claiming that while the tool is not yet perfect, it offers another way in which people can better understand the internet.
Announcing the new tool on the Webmaster Central blog, R J Pittman, director of product management for consumer search properties at Google, said: "Keep in mind that Trends for Websites is a Google Labs product and that we are experimenting with ways to improve the quality of the data."
Google Trends was initially launched two years ago and allowed users to view popular search queries from around the world. It was followed up by Hot Trends last year, which enabled the analysis of current search trends updated hourly.
