Usability "vital" for small business websites

Small businesses looking to establish an online presence have been urged to take into account factors other than visual appearance.

According to non-profit business counselling service SCORE, usability is one of the most important elements of a successful corporate website, the Terre Haute Tribune Star reports.

Businesses should consider how easy it is for web users to get around their sites, taking into consideration questions such as how easy it is to find certain information quickly and whether product categories are logical and clear, SCORE said.

"Every inch of your site should address your customers' goals and needs, not just the needs of your business," the organisation advised.

Compelling photos and graphics, a simple checkout system and a stripped down registration process can also help to improve website usability, it noted.

According to E-consultancy's search engine optimisation guide, providing links from footers can boost website usability as they offer "mini site maps" on every page.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18647084-ADNFCR
