About 14 million new domain names were added during the first three months of 2008, new research has indicated.
A total of more than 162 million domain name registrations were also made globally across all of the top level domain names, up 26 per cent compared with the previous year, according to VeriSign.
The report also identified India as being one of the biggest potential growth markets for domain name registrations. While India has the eight biggest internet population in the world, web users account for just four per cent of the total population, VeriSign noted.
"Rapidly emerging regions like India underscore the importance of ensuring that the internet infrastructure is able to serve every corner of the world," commented Raynor Dahlquist, senior vice-president of naming services at VeriSign.
Earlier this month, research from security software firm McAfee revealed that websites with addresses ending in Hong Kong's .hk domain pose the biggest security risks to internet users around the world.
