New website design for MySpace

MySpace is to be re-launched this week with a new look and a number of new features.

The social networking site will shortly have a redesigned homepage and an overhauled search facility, allowing users to carry out queries across MySpace's numerous channels using the open source Lucene engine.

Other new features include a profile editor that does not require prior knowledge of HTML and several changes to the website's video player, including the ability to change sound volume.

According to the International Herald Tribune, the redesign is part of an attempt by MySpace to maximise its revenue and attract more users in a climate where it is not yet clear how to best make money from social networking websites.

Chamath Palihapitiya, vice president of product marketing at Facebook, told the newspaper that advertisers need to look for a way of engaging the "scarce" attention of social media users in order to be successful.

"This is a journey that is going to unfold over the next five to ten years. That's when the winners will emerge," he commented.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18640286-ADNFCR
