Search company, Google, has said it would prefer Yahoo! to remain independent than come under Microsoft's ownership, InfoWorld has reported.

Google chairman and chief executive officer, Eric Schmidt, told delegates at an event at Syracuse University, Bill Gates' computer firm has the power to prevent choice.

"We think an independent Yahoo! is better for competition, for innovation and so forth," he said.

He denied his firm had tried to block a deal between the two and acknowledged Google had itself shown interest in a partnership with Yahoo!.

Mr Schmidt explained Google's attitude to monetisation, saying: "The goal of the company is not to monetize everything, the goal of the company is to change the world."

Yahoo! remains the target of a bitter takeover attempt and has called on its shareholders to vote for its current board.
