11 June 2008

Search engine firm Google has extended its control over the UK search market and now controls 90 per cent of all web queries, new data has shown.

Results published by analyst, Hitwise, revealed it increased its dominance since last year, with searches up by nine per cent.

Yahoo! was in second place, but only accounted for little more than four per cent of UK searches, followed by Microsoft (3.72 per cent) and Ask.com (3.07 per cent).

The results mirrored Google's US performance. The company now dominates both markets but is more popular in the UK, taking only 68 per cent of US search enquiries.

The analyst noted: "Search engines continue to be the primary way for internet users to navigate key industry categories in the UK."

Further data from its assessment showed there has been a 32 per cent increase in traffic from Google to social networking sites.
