The criteria used by search engines to find webpages is roughly 50:50, on-page and off-page, suggested one commentator.
Jemima Kiss, writing in the Guardian, explained when designing sites, developers should consider how they are optimised.
On-page factors "such as the actual text and content and off-page factors that include the number of external links to the site" are equally considered in more than 200 assessments made by market leader, Google, she said.
By optimising websites, firms hope to make them more visible to search, which is an essential part of creating consumer awareness.
"Most consumers use search engines every day and probably only look at the first page of search results each time," she told the Guardian.
The exact algorithm used by Google remains secret. However, companies try a number of techniques to raise their rankings, including linking their front page to news stories and tagging content with keywords.
According to Google, the most common search query in April was chihuahua, followed by john terry, marathon and ringworm.
