Representatives from government and the broadband industry are meeting today to discuss the future of UK broadband.

Ofcom will also be included in the summit, during which the government's advisory body, the Broadband Stakeholder Group (BSG) will support new investment in infrastructure.

"Next-generation broadband has the potential to transform the way we do things," said Anthony Walker, chief executive of the BSG.

However, he went on to warn it would be wrong to invest immediately: "It is tempting to jump in feet first, but it matters more to do this right than to do it now."

There is a series of planned upgrades, including BT's new ADSL2+ connections and fibre networks, which offer even faster upload and download speeds.

Ofcom is also keen new housing and business developments adopt high-speed connections in their design.

Chief executive, Ed Richards, said: "Super-fast broadband is ripe for deployment in new build areas. We need to take advantage of this and encourage investment in networks, while promoting competition."
