Internet service providers have agreed with a new code of practice produced by the regulator, Ofcom.

The guide hopes to give consumers a better understanding of what speeds they should expect from their broadband package.

Chief executive, Ed Richards, said: "Broadband is a thriving market in the UK. We want to encourage real clarity for consumers about the actual broadband speeds they can receive."

The regulator has strongly advised all fixed–line providers sign up to the code and implement its recommendations within six months of signing.

It requires them to provide an accurate estimation of speed at the time of sale, resolve technical issues to improve speed and provide customers with information on usage limits.

Mr Richards described the code of practice as a "significant step" and Ofcom is considering extending its reach to mobile services.

The announcement was widely accepted, although the Internet Service Providers' Association noted "consumers must also understand that every single broadband connection's speed will be different".
