IBM has announced its next generation of supercomputer, Blue Gene, will have the brain power of a human.

The latest incarnation will be capable of conducting one quid trillion operations per second and is due for launch next week.

"This is the system that will allow the modelling and simulation work that will need to go on in the world in order to use all of that data you're helping people to collect, with the information and knowledge they will really want," said outgoing executive vice president, Nicholas M. Donofrio.

He told delegates at the company's first European Information on Demand conference, the Blue Gene is commercially viable and made from regular computer components.

Mr Donofrio explained: "We make it with stuff that's in your game box, stuff that might even be in your PDA, stuff that's maybe no better than in some of the commercial appliances that you use."
Supercomputer development has roughly followed Moore's law, which states that the number of transistors on a chip will double about every two years.
