US legislators have suggested social networking sites (SNS) use sign-up or credit card type checks.

The attorney general of Washington state, Rob McKenna, made the suggestion at the Authentication and Online Trust Summit in Seattle and acknowledge the move would be "wildly unpopular", Info World has reported.

"We need good age and identity verification technology so that it's much harder for an individual to get online and pretend to be 15 when really it's a 45-year-old man," he noted.

The conference investigated online security and methods by which business and legislators could work together.

MySpace's chief security officer, Hemanshu Nigam, suggested the networks could also join forces to identify unwanted individuals.

He asked: "If there are bad guys in MySpace or eBay or Facebook, are they the same people?"

There are already moves towards increased interoperability - shared platforms, such as Opensocial and Google's Friends Connect are making it easier for users to operate across sites.
