Regulator, Ofcom, is checking the amount charged by BT to companies using its telecoms grid.

BT owns the majority of the country's copper telecoms cables and has allowed other firms, such as Talk Talk and Virgin to unbundled the connections using Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) and offer internet services.

Ofcom established the current charges and is pleased with the system as "there are more than four million unbundled lines in the UK, which has led to increased choice and led to an improvement in services for consumers".

The regulator hopes to finish its assessment into BT Openreach, the unit that handles wholesale services, by the end of this year.

BT has begun an upgrade of its core network and hopes to role out an ADSL2+ service, offering connection speeds up to 24 Mpbs, over the next five years.
