Jerry Yang, chief executive officer of Yahoo!, has insisted the company is not under siege.
It was reported he told the All Things Digital conference yesterday he remained the right person to lead the firm, following the recent attempted takeover from Microsoft.
"The perception of us being a company under siege is just not accurate," he said.
Bill Gates' firm was hoping the acquisition would increase the revenue it generates from search marketing, however, its bid was rejected following bitter exchanges between the pair.
The negotiations prompted further interest in the web property and Yahoo! was said to be in negotiations with AOL and News Corporation.
The New York Post reported the bid had divided Yahoo!'s board, with Mr Yang at odds with its chairman, Roy Bostock.
More recently his position was threatened by billionaire investor, Carl Icahn, who readied a board of his own.
Mr Yang said Yahoo! needed "to be incredibly relevant to the consumer". "I do think I am the best person to lead Yahoo!," he added later.
