Mark Zuckerberg's social networking site, Facebook, has said it will announce an open-source project for its developer platform, internet tech blog, TechCrunch, reported.
The site has previously said the initiative would be called fbOpen and allow any social network to be compatible.
"We're working on an open-source initiative that is meant to help application developers better understand Facebook Platform and more easily build applications," it said.
The company described the move as a natural step "so developers can build richer social applications and share what they've learned with the ecosystem".
MySpace, in collaboration with Yahoo!, eBay, Photobucket, and Twitter, has recently launched Data Availability, a scheme that helps its users share their personal data across the internet.
Google has adopted a different tack and launched Friends Connect, which allows users to add social networking features to their sites but it failed when paired with Facebook.
