Google takes a third

Google's internet properties sent more than one-third of all traffic to UK websites, new research has found.

The search engine's dominance was revealed by internet analysts, Hitwise, which took a group of 100 sites owned by the company and assessed their upstream traffic.

Together, the Google properties accounted for 36.55 per cent of upstream traffic, up from 30 per cent in March 2007.

The second most popular website in the UK in April was mail.live.com (3.2 per cent) followed by ebay.co.uk (2.7 per cent) and Facebook (2.2 per cent).

The most visited Google site was Google UK (seven per cent), followed by Google.com (1.7 per cent).

The company is further benefiting from what is known as 'universal search', which hopes to return integrated results containing video, news and images.

Despite their dominance of the UK search market, the company's advertising business could be threatened by Microsoft's continued courting of Yahoo!

Bill Gates' company has repeatedly expressed its interest in expanding revenue from online advertising.

"Yahoo wants to do breakthrough software," he told CNET News recently. "The engineers there want to compete very effectively against Google or any other thing that comes along."
