Healthy outlook for Web 2.0

Web 2.0

23 May 2008

Web 2.0 developments are influencing the healthcare sector, new research by E-Health Insider has found.

Its report, Web 2.0 in the Health Sector: Industry Review with a UK perspective, has concluded health service users are adding their own content to social health networks and revolutionising medical care.

Sir Muir Gray, chief knowledge officer of the NHS, said the reports findings will not please everyone, however, he observed "the accuracy and insights are important for all".

It examines how techniques learned from social networking sites such as Facebook and YouTube are being applied and argues, like the internet, the next medical changes will be consumer-led.

Research editor and report author, Lindsey Birnsteel, noted Web 2.0 is spawning new interactions between doctors and patients.

Social networking applications are often criticised as causing lost productivity at work.

The Trades Union Congress, however, believes they "could be a valued benefit for staff, and also help employees develop useful IT skills".
