Microsoft has launched banner ads to mobile users of its Windows LiveMessenger Service and Windows Live Hotmail.
The company said it also plans to support keyword advertising on its Live Search Mobile and will soon expand the service from beta.
"We think mobile is a tremendous opportunity going forward," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division.
Bill Gates' firm is vying for a place in the mobile internet market, which although not fully developed, is thought to be a highly lucrative source of revenue.
Brian McAndrews, senior vice president of the advertiser and publisher solutions group at Microsoft, told its annual Advance conference the company was bringing its advertising initiatives together under one brand, Microsoft advertising.
Guy Phillipson, chief executive officer of the Internet Advertising Bureau, has predicted brands will have a "wealth of opportunities to reach audiences with highly-targeted and relevant campaigns" once mobile marketing becomes increasingly sophisticated.
