Napster takes over

Categories: Internet Marketing

Internet music store, Napster has taken over as the web's largest online music store.

It claims to now offer six million tracks, which can be used on most players as they are in MP3 format.

Chris Gorog, chief executive, said: "It is really the beginning of a level playing field."

The company previously operated on a monthly payment system, whereby users could download what they wanted.

However, because of its Digital Rights Management (DRM) privacy protection software, users were limited to which players they then transferred their tracks to.

The company is hoping to challenge Apple's iTunes Music Store for a share of global profits.

Statistics from the Official UK Charts Company have revealed digital album sales increased by 69.3 per cent compared to the first quarter of last year.
