Coders of open source software have cleaned up their act, it has been reported.
Analysts, Coverity, assessed more than 55 million lines of code from more than 250 open source projects and found both quality and security has improved.
"We can see from the statistics many developers are quite passionate about writing good code," David Maxwell, open source strategist, said.
Coverity's analysis revealed a 16 per cent reduction in overall static analysis defect density and found "Null pointer reference" was the most common defect, while "User before test" was the least common.
Open source software is increasingly popular as it allows users to work collaboratively, while open source platforms allow applications to migrate between sites.
Open platforms have also encouraged developers to design widgets and applications that can be embedded in social networking sites.
