An invitation for analysts to create a new internet measurement system has been keenly accepted.
The Joint Industry Committee for Internet Measurement Systems (JICIMS) set a deadline for proposals for May 15th and its general manager, Peter Bowman, said there were plenty of responses, New Media Age has reported.
"Judging by the warm reception JICIMS has been getting we are looking at receiving a number of proposals in the next few days," he said.
Currently, a number of companies monitor internet use and report on the web's popularity based on a wide range of measurements and sectors.
JICIMS has been in talks with analysts, such as comScore, Nielsen Online and TFI.net with the hope of establishing "a degree of mutual dovetailing of the various findings as we move forward".
The shortlist should be announced by the summer and it is hoped the company tasked with creating the new set of metrics will be revealed later in the year.
In 2007, the internet attracted nearly 40 million new regular users in the European Union alone.
