Bloggers and online commentators have little knowledge of libel law and could be putting themselves at risk, it has been reported.
Duncan Calow, a digital media law specialist from legal firm, DLA Piper, said many would benefit "from some clearer guidance about posting comment online".
He warned: "The combination of confusion and complacency about the relationship between the law and user generated content (UGC) puts users at risk as they come under increasing scrutiny online."
A survey by the company found nearly half of all internet users would support a voluntary code of conduct bloggers were also split on the idea with 34 per cent against and 32 per cent in favour.
The findings also revealed 75 per cent of those who posted comment to blogs and online news pages had no knowledge of libel law.
Nielsen Online has revealed a rapid uptake of mobile SNS use, with the UK's 812,000 users leading the rest of Europe.
