IBM India leads talking website initiative

Categories: Web Design

13 May 2008

IBM India is working on the technology to create a talking website, Business Standard has reported.

The work is taking place at the computing giant's India Research Laboratory. It hopes to help users without computer skills create websites, perform searches and access business information from mobile phones.

Project director, Guruduth Banavar, told Business Standard pilots had been completed and they were in the final stages.

He acknowledged that India's booming mobile market was the inspiration for a project, which he said is "scalable and can be used across sectors".

When completed, the project will allow users to call a registry, choose from a range of services and build a website over the phone.

Clients will be quoted the price and time frame for completion and will then be able to use the service to perform internet searches.

Research from the European Commission has showed more than half of Europeans are now regular internet users, 80 per cent of them have broadband connections and 60 per cent of public services in the EU are fully available online.
