Google joins portability party
Categories: Search Engines
13 May 2008
Search company, Google, has become the latest internet firm to introduce new portability technology.
Its new range of tools, called Friend Connect, allows different sites to better integrate.
Visitors to any site using the scheme will be able to see, invite and interact with friends in social networks including Facebook, Google Talk, hi5, orkut, Plaxo, and more.
"Many sites aren't explicitly social and don't necessarily want to be social networks, but they still benefit from letting their visitors interact with each other," explained David Glazer, director of engineering.
The technology could prove useful to designers who want to introduce more social aspects to their sites.
Friends Connect utilises a growing list of social standards which include, OpenID, OAuth, OpenSocial, and the data access APIs published by Facebook, Google, MySpace, and others.
