Microsoft looks to Facebook

Microsoft is believed to have quizzed Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, to see if he would sell the social networking site, the Times has reported.

The paper said it understood Bill Gates' computing firm made the approach after it was snubbed by Google's rival, Yahoo!, but added the two were not thought to be discussing any deal.

Microsoft had its offer for Yahoo! rejected after protracted and at times bitter exchanges between the two companies.

Mr Zuckerberg's response to the approach is unknown. However, Microsoft already has a $240 million stake in his network and is keen to increase revenue from online advertising to social network users.

"Social media is a growing and varied culture, providing a wealth of entertainment, information and connections for the increasing number of people being drawn in by its power," said Alex Burmaster, internet analyst at Nielsen Online.
