Web 2.0

UK social networking sites (SNS) will attract 27 million users by 2012, new research has found.

According to studies by analyst, Datamonitor, there is a shift from mass media to social media and significant opportunities for marketers to target new demographics.

"The wealth of information stored on online social networks provides many potential benefits for marketers," said, Matthew Taylor, consumer markets analyst.

"Consumers are creating and joining existing social communities which, if harnessed correctly, can be an important marketing tool."

If these latest predictions are correct, current user levels will treble and could further highlight current bandwidth issues.

The emergence of a network society is changing personal and business communication methods.

Online virtual world, Second Life, hosts offices of international companies such as Peugeot, Coca-Cola and BMW.

Its founder, Philip Rosedale, hopes it can redefine the web and reduce the need for business air travel, the Observer reported.
