Mobile phones are seeing the next phase of Web 2.0 development as handsets and PCs continue to converge.
A new report from Frost & Sullivan indicates that mobile social networking is growing in value, with the provision of 'on-deck mobile social networking' services expected to hit $412 million by 2012.
A fast-growing concept in the US, mobile social networking is being seen as a useful marketing tool as well as an important application for internet enabled phones, although analysts say it is important to distinguish the capacity of mobiles from PCs when it comes to networking.
"While the extension of popular online social networking communities onto mobile phones is a major growth driver, it is unreasonable to expect the same level of functionality as is offered through the PC," commented Frost & Sullivan senior analyst Vikrant Gandhi.
"Mobile social networking services clearly need to be targeted toward mass-market phones in order to gain traction."
Social networking on mobile phones is seen as an important new avenue in the monetisation of services for mobile communications.
Three key trends are expected to make the issue a prominent one in coming years – the popularity of social networking on the web in general; the growth of mobile internet as a technology and the emergence of mobile advertising.
