James Murdoch, chief executive of News Corporation, has claimed iPlayer stops competition.

He revealed his opinion after a speech to the Marketing Society, which champions free markets and competition.

Despite calling the product "a big step, a pre-emptive intervention", he said it was "squashing a lot of competitors".

The BBC launched iPlayer on Christmas Day and it is now central to the debate on the UK's future internet provision.

Internet service providers are keen for the UK's infrastructure to improve so they can deliver content at the speed they promise – Tiscali has said the BBC should help fund the upgrade because iPlayer uses so much bandwidth.

Ofcom chief executive, Ed Richards, has told MPs forcing the BBC to pay "is not necessarily the only way it can happen and it is not necessarily the way we would anticipate it will happen".
