Internet Service Providers (ISPs) need to quicken their service or lose customers, consumer site Top 10 Broadband has warned.

Its research revealed connection speed is the number one consideration for consumers when they decide if they are satisfied with their ISP.

Spokesperson, Jessica McArdle, warned broadband providers "to speed up or face the wrath of disappointed customers".

In its study of UK ISPs, the site revealed Tesco was the worst performing in terms of connection speed and the Post Office's subscribers were the least satisfied.

The highest level of customer satisfaction and fastest connection speeds were achieved by O2 (6.41Mbps), Be Broadband (5.55Mbps), and Virgin Media (4.18Mbps).

The internet is currently struggling with increasingly large file transfers and users are hoping BT's 21 CN upgrade can relieve the pressure.

It will provide ADSL 2+ download speeds although will not match fibre-based networks, which can allow transfers at 100Mpbs.
